Meals on Wheels Blizzard Bags

A “SUBARU SHARE THE LOVE TRADITION”

December 14, 2018 – Rifle, Colorado

For the fifth year now, high school volunteers have spent an afternoon packing Blizzard Bags for Grand River Meals on Wheels clients. One hundred bags were filled with 48 hours of shelf stable emergency food and a little bit of love. Part of Subaru’s Share the Love grant, these bags share the love through a very tangible means. These bags are designed to reduce the food anxiety during the snowy winter months in western Garfield County. The resources for this project come from a grant from the Western Colorado Community Foundation’s Mary Catherine Gallarnau Blue Fund, funds from last year’s Subaru Share the Love Grant, and Rifle City Market.

The bags were packed by six Grand River Health Young Adult Volunteers from Coal Ridge and Rifle High Schools. The students spent the afternoon putting over twenty items into each bag to ensure proper nutrition no matter what the weather.

Grand River Meals on Wheels (GRMOW) program delivers over 1,500 meals monthly to seniors, disabled and recovering clients throughout western Garfield County, from Parachute to New Castle. This year an estimate of 18,000 meals will be delivered to the doorsteps of seniors, disabled, and hospice clients. The meals are made at Grand River Café and delivered by approximately 100 volunteers throughout the year. One excited new meals on wheels recipient called to let us know how much the bag was appreciated: “I just received the Blizzard Bag yesterday – it is amazing, I couldn’t believe it. It is the most wonderful thing I have seen. And to think school kids helped fill them up. Thank you so much for all you do – and it is blizzardy today!”
