Joanne Teik PA

Joanne E. Teik, MPA-C

Joanne Teik holds a Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from the Marquette University of Milwaukee, Wisconsin as well as a Bachelor degree of Science in Microbiology and a Bachelor of Allied Health Sciences degree, both from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Wisconsin.

Joanne grew up in Milwaukee Wisconsin, with her mother, father, five sisters and brother. Right near the university and by lake.

Joanne’s career of medicine spurred not only from her love of the sciences but also from her love of challenges. Growing up, her father would pose riddles and puzzles to her and her siblings to solve, challenging her to think differently and gain new perspectives. She chose the field of medicine because of the challenge the field can represent and finding the best solutions for her patients.

During her undergraduate program in the late 80s, Joanne spent her summers as a raft guide in our valley, where she also met and married her husband and now share two children who are in their early 20s. Joanne’s newest addition to her family is a recently adopted 9 month old puppy from a local animal shelter.

Joanne shared with us some of her passions including baking and painting as well as the usual outdoor activities we Coloradans get to enjoy every day, like rafting, cross country and Nordic, skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and mountain biking.

Chrissy Meoni, PA-C

Phone: 970.625.1100

Chrissy Meoni is a Board-Certified Physician Assistant. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from University of San Diego in California. She then received her Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.

Chrissy grew up in a small, Appalachian mountain town in Virginia. She has lived in Colorado since 2015 but didn’t start her journey here. Chrissy was a wilderness EMT in Montana where she treated those in difficult locations with limited access and supplies, then made the jump to the Aspen Fire department. She was with Aspen Fire for roughly 5 years then moved to Idaho to work towards her Master’s degree to become a PA. Chrissy very much enjoys cooking, mountain biking, hiking, skiing and all the things Colorado has to offer.

When asked what she would like her patients to know about her, Chrissy replied “the most important part of patient care is making a plan together. Collaborating and compromising on a patient’s care is what keeps them involved with their own health so they have more control. If a patient isn’t involved with their care, they are less inclined to follow through with what they need to stay healthy.”

Jess McDonnell CFNP

Jessica McDonnell, FNP

Jessica McDonnell was raised in Rapid City, South Dakota. Her mother was a labor and delivery nurse in Rapid City and even at a young age she was impressed how women would come up to her mom and share stories about the children her mother helped deliver and care for. “It happened everywhere, the grocery store, the mall” says Jessica, “It gave me a firsthand look at the impact my mother made in people’s lives. I knew then I wanted to make an impact like she did” adds McDonnell.

After high school, McDonnell attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa on a soccer scholarship where she received her BA in Biology. After college, she played professional Women’s soccer in Germany for a time and then returned to the states where she went on to complete her BS in Nursing from Northeastern University in Boston.

McDonnell received her Masters of Science in Nursing and her FNP from George Washington University School of Nursing in 2018. She did many of her clinical rotations at Grand River Health and Valley View, where she came to love the mountains on the western slope. “I was very impressed with the medical staff here. As a student, they were amazingly supportive and answered any questions I had. I knew this was an organization I would like to eventually call home.”

When asked about her philosophy for caring for her patients McDonnell says “I enjoy treating the whole person…good health encompasses so much more than physical heath. That’s why I enjoy rural medicine, because you really get to become part of the community and understand the challenges and opportunities that arise.”

McDonnell and her husband reside in New Castle with their two large Malamutes Dakota and Cali! They love to ski, snowboard and take advantage of spending time in the beautiful outdoors and the mountains.

Sarah Surprise, PA-C

Sarah Suprise, PA-C

Sarah has been at GRHD since January 2021. She was attracted to Grand River’s sense of community among patients and staff, the talent amongst our providers, and the opportunity to help provide care in a rural environment. Sarah grew up in Kalamazoo, MI, graduated from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, and knew she wanted to be a PA-C after working as an ED Tech in a busy Denver emergency department. The most rewarding aspect of her job is when she is able to take her patient’s concerns, illnesses, fears, or questions and provide them with reassurance, relief, and answers.

Sarah loves traveling and camping with her partner and dog Scoobie. She enjoys music (The Black Keys, Lake Street Drive, Yo Yo Ma and Pink Floyd), hiking and has been dabbling at golf.  She is inspired by the beauty of mother nature, the good within people and the love of dogs.
